Our Story
The Noakes family have farmed at Somersal Herbert for over 100 years, the Farmhouse and brick barns were built in the 1860's and the 150 acres of land attached is still farmed by the family. The fabulous setting of Somersal Farm in the rolling Derbyshire countryside gave the family the confidence to develop the buildings into large holiday cottages. The business began with the Farmhouse in 1999 and then the barns were converted over the next few years, with the final barn completed in 2005.
The properties can sleep over 80 people in 31 bedrooms. As well as being let for weekly holidays and short breaks we also host several weddings each year and the Cottages are a popular corporate venue.
From the doorstep of any of the properties at Somersal Cottages, there are several footpaths to walk and explore, a perfect opportunity for some fresh air and to enjoy the peace and quiet of this rural area.
If you're looking for a slightly faster pace then head for a day at the horse racing in Uttoxeter, a fabulous day out.
The historic town of Uttoxeter itself has several shops, bars, fast food outlets and restaurants, in addition to a Tesco, Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl for those all-important supplies.
For the younger and more adventurous members of your group, why not head to Alton Towers which is only 10 miles away from Somersal.
To find a lovely array of bespoke boutique shops from clothing to kitchen ware, gifts, cards and places to eat, visit the market town of Ashbourne, which again is only approximately 10 miles in distance. Ashbourne hosts a Sainsbury’s and Waitrose and a small Co-op which houses a post office. From Ashbourne you can head into the Peak District National Park. Cycle hire is available in Ashbourne, where you can cycle along the Tissington Trail, an old disused railway track thereby offering fairly flat and easy biking for all ages, (http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting/cycle/cycle-hire-centres/ashbourne).
The village of Tissington is well worth a visit, either as a stop off on the cycle route or by car. Situated at the southern edge of the Peak District National Park, 5 miles north of Ashbourne, the village boasts a lovely tearoom, traditional village shops including a butcher, wonderful countywide walks and Tissington Hall, which is open to the public on selected of dates in spring and summer – visit their website to find opening times. A traditional Well Dressing event is held in the village every year in May or June.
